Is There a Difference Between an Insurance Broker and an Agent?

Insurance Broker vs. Agent

We are asked this question often. It is sometimes believed that these two jobs are the same. Both brokers and agents sell insurance, right? Right. But there are important differences, difference that can have an impact on you.

The main differences have to do with choice and independence. Morison Insurance is an insurance brokerage. We are independent, and although we represent several insurance companies, we work for you, our customer. We are independent. We are able to “shop” many companies for the best policies and prices for you. You have choices when it comes to buying insurance. At Morison Insurance, we shop and you save. We shop dozens of companies to find the coverage that fits your unique needs and we look for the best price for you. That is our commitment.

As insurance brokers, we are objective. We are not employed by any insurance companies. A broker’s only allegiance is to get the best insurance for the customer. Insurance brokers have in-depth knowledge of insurance, provide personal service and are licensed and trained through the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario. We are members of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario which represents a network of independent and professional brokers.

Our brokers are trained to assess your insurance needs. In the event of a claim, we are committed to helping you with the claims process from the time you make a claim to seeing it through to a fair resolution as quickly and effortlessly as possible.
We are pleased to provide you with a quote online, on the phone or in person. We will ask questions about your needs, and compare coverages and prices. We will also compare discounts to get you an even better price whenever possible. We will also explain insurance terms, additional coverage options, if applicable, and any ‘small print’ that may not be clear to you. We are always available if you have questions about your insurance or changes to your coverage are needed.  These and other services are available to you as our customer.

To make your insurance super easy our customers have anytime, anywhere access to their insurance through our MyMorison app.

You will also receive our regular electronic newsletters with money-saving tips, insurance news and safety tips.

An agent, by contrast, sells insurance for one company only. A direct writer also sells insurance for one company only.  This means you cannot choose insurance from several companies and there is no independence. These are salespeople employed by an insurance company.

So, you can see that an insurance broker is not the same as an insurance agent. A broker sells products from several insurance companies. Most insurance brokerages are independently owned.  Morison Insurance is independently owned. We work for you and you alone.
