Wind Storm Preparation Guide
As many will recall, on May 4, 2018 Ontario was hit with a wind storm that caused $380 Million dollars in damages, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Shingles were blown off of roofs, trees toppled, fences knocked down, and power was out for thousands.
When a wind storm warning is issued, there are steps that a homeowner can take in order to prevent a loss.
1. Regularly make it a point to inspect your roof; Are any shingles loose or missing? Replace any loose or lifting shingles promptly. Consider having your roof inspected by a professional annually.
2. Secure any loose objects such as patio furniture, trampolines, and children's toys.
3. Keep an eye out for dead or dying trees as they are more likely to crack or blow over.
4. Avoid parking your vehicle under trees. Park your vehicle in a garage if you have the option as vehicles parked in the driveway or on the street are more likely to be struck by flying shingles or branches.
5. Repair and reinforce any loose posts or sections of fence on your property.
6. Have an emergency kit prepared. Ensure there are flashlights, food, and water available for all members of your household.
Once a wind storm has occurred and the storm has passed, inspect the outside of your home as well as the inside. If you discover that your roof is missing shingles, it may be in your best interest to contact a roofer for emergency services to mitigate any further damage. In many cases, roofers can replace the lost shingles at a reasonable rate. If the damage is more extensive, it may be a better option to make a claim through your homeowners insurance policy.
