Dealing with a Hit and Run
As a vehicle owner and operator, being involved in an automobile accident is never a pleasant experience. The situation can be made worse if the other driver refuses to stop or flees the scene, leaving you to deal with the damage to your vehicle. This is classified as a Hit and Run. In some cases the damage may only be minor, however, it can result in a major inconvenience. Here are a few tips in the event that you find yourself in this unfortunate scenario.
If there are any injuries involved, please call 911.
Try to stay calm and review your surroundings. If possible, take some photos of the damage. Attempt to collect as much information as possible such as the exact location, time of day, and if there are any witnesses. If you are able to locate a witness, record as much information as they can provide to you such as the year, make, model, colour and license plate number of the other vehicle involved. Additionally, collect the contact details for all of the witnesses. This is vital information for your next step; the police report.
Be sure to report the incident to a Collision Reporting Centre as soon as possible; even if the damage is minor. Some insurance companies require that a Hit & Run be reported to the authorities within 24 hours in order for it to be considered a Not-At-Fault claim.
Most importantly, contact your Insurance Broker! We are here to guide and support you through this frustrating time. We will discuss your coverage and the claims process. In order to have coverage for such a loss, you must carry Collision Coverage on your vehicle and the claim would be subject to your Collision deductible. As long as the incident was reported to the police as a Hit and Run, you will not see your insurance rates increase as a direct result of the accident.
