If you are planning to host an event in a venue that's open to the public, it is strongly recommended that you cover yourself against any potential liabilities. Many venues will actually require you to have party alcohol liability coverage before letting you rent the space out, so it's important to speak with your venue before starting on any plans. Even more private venues (like an event on your own property) can lead to mishaps owed to alcohol consumption and it's always best to play it safe and have protection in case any legal issues arise from your event.
The bigger the event, or the more guests you are expecting, the more liability you might need. Different policies will offer liability insurance limits that vary by millions of dollars. At Morison Insurance, we'll factor in all the elements of your event to ensure that you're properly covered but not spending more on PAL insurance than you actually need. Remember that a valid liquor licence must be obtained from the Liquor Control Board of Ontario for events where alcohol will be served.

What's a Party Alcohol Liability insurance deductible?
If you ever experience damage, loss or legal issues due to the event that you are hosting and have resultant repairs or replacements, the deductible is the amount of the cost that you've agreed to cover on your own before your insurance company covers the rest. Very often, a standard deductible is about $500. For example, if you run into legal fees after your event and you need to pay a lawyer $10,000 for assistance, you will have to pay $500 and the insurance company will cover the remaining $9,500.
I'm hosting a wedding on my own property. Do I need PAL insurance?
You are not legally required to have PAL insurance, but it is strongly recommended. On a special day like your wedding in particular, you want everything to run smoothly and only be left with beautiful memories, not debt due to a lawsuit. Protect yourself and be in the clear!
What are the requirements to obtain PAL insurance?
You will first need to have a liquor license for your event.
